[Transcript] Episode 2

Animal communication is an emerging area of research, and we just so happen to have front row seats to it! We are both involved with some fascinating research that's happening at the University of Saskatchewan's School of Environment and Sustainability (in Canada) that's exploring the phenomenon of "intuitive interspecies communication." On May 24th, 25th and 26th, 2022, there is a virtual event taking place that you are all invited to, called the International Multispecies Methods Research Symposium. The event aims to:

  • Embark on a scholarly exploration and deeper understanding of intuitive interspecies communication (IIC) as practiced by animal communicators (an emerging multispecies method);

  • Catalyze novel partnerships and grow an international network of IIC research;

  • Develop new research questions, directions, teams, discussion groups across diverse areas of inquiry and disciplines.

This event will be of interest to those who are seeking to more deeply understand animals and are interested in learning more about intuitive interspecies communication and emerging research in this area. The event takes place over the course of 3 days at different timings (more info and schedule available on the website), and will include keynote presentations, sample animal communication consults, group discussions with attendees on various topics, and networking opportunities with researchers, animal communicators and symposium participants. Some very well-respected and world-renowned individuals will be presenting at the event, including:

  • Penelope Smith

  • Cara Gubbins

  • Rosalyn Berne

  • Maia Kincaid

  • Wynter Worsthorne

and helping people

17

00:00:43,040 --> 00:00:48,960

come to a much deeper understanding of

18

00:00:45,440 --> 00:00:51,520

who the animals truly are at their core

00:00:59,120 --> 00:01:04,479

with fascinating people about animal and

25

00:01:01,760 --> 00:01:05,840

nature sentience consciousness and

26

00:01:04,479 --> 00:01:08,320

communication

00:01:12,560 --> 00:01:15,759

and care

32

00:01:13,840 --> 00:01:19,360

for the fellow beings who share our

33

00:01:15,759 --> 00:01:19,360

beautiful mother earth with us

00:01:25,040 --> 00:01:28,799

episode on today's show barbara and i

38

00:01:27,600 --> 00:01:30,880

are going to be talking to you about

39

00:01:28,799 --> 00:01:33,119

something that's very near and dear to

40

00:01:30,880 --> 00:01:34,960

our hearts there's an event coming up

41

00:01:33,119 --> 00:01:36,799

that we wanted to tell you all about and

42

00:01:34,960 --> 00:01:41,280

we wanted to invite you to

43

00:01:36,799 --> 00:01:42,799

so just so you know today is may 14 2022

44

00:01:41,280 --> 00:01:44,560

and this event that we'll be telling you

45

00:01:42,799 --> 00:01:50,159

about is taking place in a couple of

46

00:01:44,560 --> 00:01:52,240

weeks on may 24th 25th and 26th of 2022

47

00:01:50,159 --> 00:01:54,640

it's happening online and tickets are on

48

00:01:52,240 --> 00:01:56,799

sale until may 20th so if you're

49

00:01:54,640 --> 00:01:58,640

listening to this episode anytime soon

50

00:01:56,799 --> 00:01:59,920

and are interested in checking it out

51

00:01:58,640 --> 00:02:02,240

you have a little bit more time to

52

00:01:59,920 --> 00:02:03,920

register and sign up to attend

53

00:02:02,240 --> 00:02:06,640

so without further ado

54

00:02:03,920 --> 00:02:09,440

let me tell you a little bit more

55

00:02:06,640 --> 00:02:12,480

so a couple years ago i came across the

56

00:02:09,440 --> 00:02:14,480

research of a scholar here in canada at

57

00:02:12,480 --> 00:02:16,080

the university of saskatchewan

58

00:02:14,480 --> 00:02:17,599

at their school of environment and

59

00:02:16,080 --> 00:02:20,000

sustainability

60

00:02:17,599 --> 00:02:22,239

called dr mj barrett

61

00:02:20,000 --> 00:02:25,120

she has been working for many years on

62

00:02:22,239 --> 00:02:27,200

research that is aiming to deepen the

63

00:02:25,120 --> 00:02:29,040

animal human understanding and

64

00:02:27,200 --> 00:02:31,360

relationships through intuitive

65

00:02:29,040 --> 00:02:33,200

inter-species communication

66

00:02:31,360 --> 00:02:35,519

and you might hear that term come up

67

00:02:33,200 --> 00:02:36,959

later in this episode and if you're also

68

00:02:35,519 --> 00:02:38,800

interested in the event you'll see this

69

00:02:36,959 --> 00:02:41,440

term come up for sure

70

00:02:38,800 --> 00:02:44,160

intuitive interspecies communication or

71

00:02:41,440 --> 00:02:47,920

iic for short is basically another way

72

00:02:44,160 --> 00:02:49,840

of saying animal communication but it's

73

00:02:47,920 --> 00:02:52,239

a little bit more broader because it's

74

00:02:49,840 --> 00:02:53,280

incorporating all species which includes

75

00:02:52,239 --> 00:02:55,519

nature

76

00:02:53,280 --> 00:02:57,040

all beings in nature as well and her

77

00:02:55,519 --> 00:02:59,360

research has really focused on

78

00:02:57,040 --> 00:03:02,000

understanding and applying

79

00:02:59,360 --> 00:03:04,239

multi-species research methods and what

80

00:03:02,000 --> 00:03:06,000

that really means is looking at how we

81

00:03:04,239 --> 00:03:07,920

can collaborate

82

00:03:06,000 --> 00:03:10,480

and how we can

83

00:03:07,920 --> 00:03:11,680

involve other species in research

84

00:03:10,480 --> 00:03:14,080

methods

85

00:03:11,680 --> 00:03:17,120

and how we can use that knowledge that

86

00:03:14,080 --> 00:03:18,800

we gain from the research to transform

87

00:03:17,120 --> 00:03:21,040

our current understandings and

88

00:03:18,800 --> 00:03:24,080

approaches to how we work on

89

00:03:21,040 --> 00:03:26,720

sustainability programs and education

90

00:03:24,080 --> 00:03:28,959

and how we really

91

00:03:26,720 --> 00:03:30,080

interact with the environment and go

92

00:03:28,959 --> 00:03:33,440

about

93

00:03:30,080 --> 00:03:36,000

creating solutions for sustainability

94

00:03:33,440 --> 00:03:37,920

and really bridging the knowledge

95

00:03:36,000 --> 00:03:41,040

that exists already

96

00:03:37,920 --> 00:03:42,879

in many indigenous cultures and and

97

00:03:41,040 --> 00:03:44,640

through other ways of knowing and bring

98

00:03:42,879 --> 00:03:47,200

that into

99

00:03:44,640 --> 00:03:48,799

the world of academia and studying it

100

00:03:47,200 --> 00:03:51,200

and publishing it and putting it out

101

00:03:48,799 --> 00:03:52,879

there in a way that other academic

102

00:03:51,200 --> 00:03:55,200

professionals can

103

00:03:52,879 --> 00:03:58,319

understand it and then

104

00:03:55,200 --> 00:04:00,560

further that education even more

105

00:03:58,319 --> 00:04:02,879

so this event is called the

106

00:04:00,560 --> 00:04:04,319

international multi-species research

107

00:04:02,879 --> 00:04:06,799

symposium

108

00:04:04,319 --> 00:04:08,159

shifting paradigms in human animal

109

00:04:06,799 --> 00:04:10,560

relations

110

00:04:08,159 --> 00:04:12,000

and i will actually be hosting it along

111

00:04:10,560 --> 00:04:14,480

with mj

112

00:04:12,000 --> 00:04:16,160

which i'm very excited about and

113

00:04:14,480 --> 00:04:17,919

basically what it is is it's a

114

00:04:16,160 --> 00:04:19,759

conference all about animal

115

00:04:17,919 --> 00:04:21,919

communication

116

00:04:19,759 --> 00:04:24,240

and at this event we'll we'll be

117

00:04:21,919 --> 00:04:26,880

bringing together scholars animal

118

00:04:24,240 --> 00:04:28,960

communicators who who practice animal

119

00:04:26,880 --> 00:04:30,639

communication professionally

120

00:04:28,960 --> 00:04:32,800

animal care practitioners and

121

00:04:30,639 --> 00:04:34,560

professionals who work with animals in

122

00:04:32,800 --> 00:04:36,720

various capacities

123

00:04:34,560 --> 00:04:39,040

and also other folks who are just

124

00:04:36,720 --> 00:04:41,280

interested in this topic or might be

125

00:04:39,040 --> 00:04:43,040

just starting to learn about it

126

00:04:41,280 --> 00:04:45,199

and other researchers

127

00:04:43,040 --> 00:04:47,600

and academics who are interested in

128

00:04:45,199 --> 00:04:49,360

hearing more about this topic to bring

129

00:04:47,600 --> 00:04:51,840

all these people together in a place

130

00:04:49,360 --> 00:04:52,960

where we can create respectful and open

131

00:04:51,840 --> 00:04:55,120

dialogue

132

00:04:52,960 --> 00:04:56,960

about the research that has already

133

00:04:55,120 --> 00:04:59,759

happened about the research that's going

134

00:04:56,960 --> 00:05:02,960

on right now and to really come together

135

00:04:59,759 --> 00:05:05,680

to discuss where we can go from here

136

00:05:02,960 --> 00:05:08,240

given that it's a relatively new area of

137

00:05:05,680 --> 00:05:10,960

dedicated academic study

138

00:05:08,240 --> 00:05:12,240

we really want this forum to be a place

139

00:05:10,960 --> 00:05:15,600

where

140

00:05:12,240 --> 00:05:18,400

we're not proving or disproving that

141

00:05:15,600 --> 00:05:20,080

inter-species communication exists

142

00:05:18,400 --> 00:05:21,840

rather we're really looking at this as

143

00:05:20,080 --> 00:05:24,400

an opportunity for people who are

144

00:05:21,840 --> 00:05:26,639

interested in this topic to come

145

00:05:24,400 --> 00:05:29,039

together and engage in thoughtful and

146

00:05:26,639 --> 00:05:31,039

productive dialogue about intraspecies

147

00:05:29,039 --> 00:05:33,280

communication and where we can go from

148

00:05:31,039 --> 00:05:33,280

here

149

00:05:33,520 --> 00:05:37,280

and one of the other main objectives of

150

00:05:35,520 --> 00:05:40,639

this event is to

151

00:05:37,280 --> 00:05:42,400

bring people together who are

152

00:05:40,639 --> 00:05:45,199

who are all over the world doing

153

00:05:42,400 --> 00:05:47,759

interesting things in their own

154

00:05:45,199 --> 00:05:50,400

lives and to really catalyze new

155

00:05:47,759 --> 00:05:53,280

partnerships and collaborations

156

00:05:50,400 --> 00:05:55,520

and create an international network of

157

00:05:53,280 --> 00:05:57,600

interest species com interspecies

158

00:05:55,520 --> 00:05:59,360

communication research

159

00:05:57,600 --> 00:06:01,600

bring these people together so they can

160

00:05:59,360 --> 00:06:03,360

learn what what they're all doing in

161

00:06:01,600 --> 00:06:05,039

different parts of the world

162

00:06:03,360 --> 00:06:06,960

uh whether they're doing it in an

163

00:06:05,039 --> 00:06:09,919

academic capacity in a professional

164

00:06:06,960 --> 00:06:11,199

capacity or they're just interested in

165

00:06:09,919 --> 00:06:13,680

this topic

166

00:06:11,199 --> 00:06:16,880

and start forming those relationships so

167

00:06:13,680 --> 00:06:19,120

we can really benefit from

168

00:06:16,880 --> 00:06:20,639

the work that we're all doing

169

00:06:19,120 --> 00:06:22,800

so it's a place where we're going to be

170

00:06:20,639 --> 00:06:25,440

developing new research questions

171

00:06:22,800 --> 00:06:27,520

directions building teams discussion

172

00:06:25,440 --> 00:06:30,240

groups and bringing together people

173

00:06:27,520 --> 00:06:32,080

across various diverse areas of inquiry

174

00:06:30,240 --> 00:06:34,479

and disciplines

175

00:06:32,080 --> 00:06:36,479

so this event is really going to be of

176

00:06:34,479 --> 00:06:39,680

interest to those who are seeking to

177

00:06:36,479 --> 00:06:41,039

more deeply understand animals

178

00:06:39,680 --> 00:06:42,880

and

179

00:06:41,039 --> 00:06:44,400

people who really want to be part of the

180

00:06:42,880 --> 00:06:48,720

discussion

181

00:06:44,400 --> 00:06:53,599

about where we go next from here in in

182

00:06:48,720 --> 00:06:53,599

bringing together research and practice

183

00:06:54,000 --> 00:07:00,720
